Negende Eeuwfeest van de Maltezer Orde

In het kader van de viering van het 9e eeuwfeest van de Orde waren Ordeleden uit de hele wereld op uitnodiging van de Grootmeester Fra' Andrew Bertie in Rome bijeengekomen op donderdag 24 juni 1999, feestdag van de geboorte van St. Jan de Doper, patroon van de Orde. Ook de verschillende Johanniter Orden waren uitgenodigd deel te nemen aan deze pelgrimage naar Rome.

Om 08.30 uur werd de Eucharistie gevierd in de basiliek van de St. Pieter. Al vroeg konden zij op de piazza Augusto Imperatore instappen in gereedstaande autobussen die het gezelschap brachten naar het plein voor de grote ontvangstzaal binnen het Vaticaan. Honderden Ordeleden, in hun wapperende kovel en cape, schreden, samen met gedelegeerden van de verschillende Johanniter Orden in mantel, in een lange feestelijke stoet voort langs de buitenzijde van de St. Pieter; bij een kleine zij-ingang wachtten zij en keken naar de aankomst van de officiële gasten, o.a. de President van Italië, ambassadeurs van vele landen bij de Orde en gedelegeerden van de Orde, die de basiliek binnengingen; hierna volgden zij en konden ternauwernood een plaats vinden in de absis. Na afloop van de Hoogmis waren allen samen op het St. Pietersplein om te luisteren naar de Paus, waarna men hotelwaarts ging.

"Dear Brothers and Sisters!

1. On the occasion of the feast of St. John the Baptist, your Holy Patron, you have wanted to gather for a solemn celebration in the basilica of St. Peter. I welcome to each of you and I greet the entire Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, called the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, which has recently celebrated its General Chapter.

I greet specially the Prince and Grand Master Fra' Andrew Bertie, the 'Cardinalis Patronus' Pio Laghi, the Prelate Monsignor Donato ed Bonis, the Grand Chancellor and the Dignitaries of the just renewed Sovereign Council. I wish you all succesful work in the service of God, the Church and the Order.

For one nine hundred years, your meritorious Order have been bearing faithful witness in the world to its motto 'tuitio fidei, obsequium pauperum', corresponding to the evangelical command to 'Love God and love thy neighbour'.

2. You are fully convinced that the defence and expression of the Faith constitutes the basis of evangelisation, and you want to offer your contribution so that the evangelical message can continue to illuminate also the third millenium of the Christian era, now imminent. To this end, you feel pledged to act out your allegiance to Christ through the expression of love, which becomes service to your brethern, especially the poor: what you rightly call 'obsequium pauperum'.

Your presence alongside the sick and the suffering, earthquake victims and refugees effectively testifies to this love for the least. It qualifies your religious end sovereign Order as a worthy structure that shoulders the burden of human suffering.

Remain strong in your allegiance to Christ, the Church and the poor. Bear always in mind the words of Jesus: "This is my command, that you love one another as I have loved you" (Joh. 15, 12) and again: "As you did it to one of the least of these brethern you did it to me" (Mt. 25, 40).

While I hope that you meritorious action may intensify, I entreat for each of you the maternal protection of your heavenly Patron, the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Philermo, who has always accompanied you at home and in exile. May the Order's holy Patron St. John the Baptist, herald of the presence of Christ in the history of the world, also support you.

With these sentiments, I willingly impart the Apostolic Benediction to the Grand Master, to all you present and to the entire Sovereign Military Order of Malta, particularly to the sick and the suffering you assist in every part of the world."

Om 18:00 uur begon de officiële ontvangst van de Grootmeester in de tuinen van de Villa Malta, het paleis van de Orde op de Aventijnse heuvel. Het was stralend zonnig weer, iedereen kon genieten van het schitterend uitzicht op de St.Pieter; eveneens bezochten velen de bij het paleis behorende kapel in de tuin, waarvan de geschiedenis beschreven is in de Revue Internationale van de Orde van juli 1990.
